Still No Stimulus Check? It May Come as a Debit Card Instead
The IRS will be sending about 8 million payments as a prepaid debit card instead of a direct deposit in the new round of economic impact payments as part of the latest COVID-19 relief package.
If you haven’t received your $600 payment already, the IRS advises you to watch your mail carefully, as the form of payment for the second stimulus check may be different than the one this past spring.
The IRS says that it has already issued millions of the $600 payments via direct deposit as well as by mailing paper checks. But many Americans still haven’t received their checks. The IRS advises Americans to visit “Get My Payment” on IRS.gov to check the status of their payment.
The prepaid debit card—called the economic impact payment card—is being issued by MetaBank N.A., the Treasury’s financial agent. Learn more about the card at EIPcard.com.
EIP card recipients will be able to make purchases online or in stores where Visa debit cards are accepted. You can also use the cards to get cash from in-network ATMs or transfer the funds to a personal bank account. The IRS says the EIP card provides consumers with added protection against fraud, loss, or other errors. A replacement EIP card can be obtained if necessary.
The IRS says the EIP cards will be sent in a white envelope with the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal. The mailing will include instructions on how to activate and use the card.
